The responses of the state

India’s central government and nuclear establishment remained unfazed, however; the first reactor was expected to be commissioned in a matter of weeks. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa wrote a strongly worded letter to Prime Minister Singh:

The satisfaction of the people of the area is of paramount importance to my Government and the State of Tamil Nadu. May I add that it is imperative that necessary measures to allay the fears of the people are undertaken before any precipitate action is embarked upon?
